Part I - Clouds and Coffee

I met Tegan Cooke back in 2016 and was instantly drawn to her vibrant personality, her passion for healthier living and the switch she made from smoking to vaping.

As she was the first person to be featured in the Passions, I wanted to spend the day with her, exploring her world and the places she visited.

We started off at the Prohibition store in Tunbridge Wells. Enjoying a warm cup of coffee and talking about vaping, e-liquids and the benefits the changeup had given her.

After that we ventured into the surrounding areas of Tunbridge Wells, discovering places that Tegan used to visit at an earlier age (and getting some more shots on a particularly foggy and moody day).

Q & A

Whenever possible, I try and get a quick Q & A with featured people, so we can delve a little deeper into their interests and passions. It’s also nice to find out more about new people you come across and get a feel of their past, their aspirations and some of the quirkiness that makes it all possible.

Here’s mine and Tegan’s chat together:

Any unusual or bizarre nicknames your known as?

Tegan the Vegan
Tiggz
Tiggles
Tegs

What is your dream job/vocation?

My current job is definitely my dream job but I’d also love to barber in London a couple of days a week in the future.

Let’s forget about the one word answer, what is your passion? Be as short or as detailed as you’d like.

My passion is allowing other people to feel great about themselves and be able to show the person they truly are. I enjoy all aspects of my work – that includes cutting, colouring and styling to create a complete look.

I also love creating avant garde looks, allowing me to get creative and let my mind loose on many weird and wonderful hair projects.

What got you interested in this particular passion?

I had a back injury while competing in trampolining (years ago) which made me have to retire from the sport. This meant I had to look at other options for my future.

I wanted to go for something creative and would allow me to be the person I wanted to be. Hairdressing came up and as soon as I started I fell in love with it.

What else gets you excited? Could be other passions, a hobby - anything you deem relevant?

Art

Plants

Veganism and animals

Can you tell me about some brands/companies or products which you love?

In today’s world, we are constantly connected to apps, websites and so much more through social networks and smart phones. Which apps, websites etc do you use on a daily basis and why?

Instagram – It allows me to constantly see trends and new things from creators I follow. It also lets me follow hair and stylist interests and inspiring people. Finally it allows me to share my life, what I believe in and work I have done.

Facebook – Can keep in touch easily with friends from all over the world.

What is something about yourself that you hope will change?

Get more tattoos!

Where would you like to visit in the future and why?

Thailand- The culture interests me as it’s predominantely a Buddhist culture. I have always had a very spiritual surrounding growing up and still follow this today. I also want to have the honor of having a mantra pray tattooed and would only want it done by someone who could bless it after and choose what is best for me and my life.

What’s your all-time favourite place to visit?

The village I grew up in – Charing in Kent. I love visiting at night and seeing the stars so bright and always seeing at least one shooting star. It was a magical place to grow up.

What do you think about more than anything else?

Where I’ll go next and where my life will take me…

What are the top THREE qualities that draw you to someone? (doesn’t have to be sexually, more in terms of intrigue/interest etc).

Hmmm, I’d say – Their Smell – Their personality – Their Aura

What is your strongest sense?

Smell – I’m always sensitive to smells. They remind me of memories and people I have or have had as a part of my life.

What is your current occupation?

Hairdresser and Professional Barber

If you could describe your favourite passion in one word, what would it be?

CREATE

Any particular ‘idols’ from your favourite passion? People that inspire you and motivate you?

Some of the people I work with and have worked with have always inspired me to push myself further creatively.

There are many people in the industry that allow you to find inspirations and ideas to help you keep up with new trends and ways to create new styles.

Guy Tang has always been someone I have looked up to with colouring -he creates looks that are out of this world.

How do you FEED YOUR PASSION? (Things you get up to which involve your passion in some way, large or small)?

From day to day work in the salon, hair shows, cat walks, fashion museums, fashion events and ofcourse – Instagram!

We’ve all got a past, full of highlights, low points and everything in between. If you had the power to go back in time and change one thing in your own past, what would it be?

Absolutely nothing! Everything that has happened in my past that I have at first wanted to change has led me to something better or been a giant learning experience.

I always try to live by the ethos ‘everything happens for a reason’.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Are you a creature of habit or an adventurous soul?

Adventurous – I always enjoy finding new places to go for walks/hiking, shopping, chilling and self reflection.

I always travelled a lot with my dad as a child and it gave me the bug from a young age to want to go out and experience the world and it’s many places.

What’s a strange occurrence/‘thing’ you’ve experienced but have never (or rarely) shared with anyone?

I don’t think there is anything. I’m a very open person and very comfortable in the person I am.

Can you give us some examples of things that have ‘amazed’ you?

The salt lakes in western Australia – incredible!

Seeing my animals grow from being bottle fed to now – all grown up!

Seeing a boat rescue on my way from France on the ferry. I couldn’t believe how the boat was still moving but the helicopter stayed in perfect line as if neither them or the boat was moving.

Some vegan activists work I have come across online.

Ever find yourself singing or doing something a little ‘odd’ or out of the blue?

All the time! Life woudn’t be fun without your weird and wonderful moments!

Which books are you currently reading or planning to read?

I am currently reading The Book of Dust by Philip Pullman.

When making an entrance to a party/gathering, do you make your presence known? Do you slip in and look for someone you know? Do you sneak in quietly and find a safe spot to roost?

I tend to slip in and look for someone I know.

Thanks for your time Tegan!

Part II - A Closer Cut

A few years have gone by since that chilly, foggy afternoon at Tunbridge Wells and today we’re exploring the professional Barbering of Tegan at Number Nine salon.

After our first talk in the coffee shop, I was eager to explore Tegan’s main passion that became evident from our Q & A. I tagged along to one of her usual cuts, to get some pictures and also make a few fun videos of her in action!

Video Teaser

Here’s a brief segment of one of the videos taken that evening. Visit the Instagram to view the full video with audio. You’ll also find another filmed interview with Tegan within the main posts on Instagram. If you’re using a mobile device, tap the image below for playback.
