Meet Alexander AKA Sasha

Mid June, GPAD opened it’s doors to external submissions worldwide. We were hungry to find out what people are passionate about, and being based in the UK, meant we were restricted somewhat in regards to who we can meet with and document ourselves.

We set up a Project on the platform ‘We The Project’, in the hopes that we would be able to find people from around the world who wanted to share a little about themselves, their story and their interests.

And are we glad we did!

Sasha was one of the first submissions we received and wow, just wow! Clean images, diverse areas of photography covered and a real eye for capturing people and places.

Below you’ll find just a selection of images he sent over.

Q & A

Whenever possible, we try and get a quick Q & A with featured people, so we can delve a little deeper into their interests and passions. It’s also nice to find out more about new people you come across and get a feel of their past, their aspirations and some of the quirkiness that makes it all possible.

Here’s mine and Sasha’s chat together:

Hi! So, before we begin, what’s your name?

My name is Alexander, I go by Sasha though

Where are you currently based?

Any unusual or bizarre nicknames your known as?

I don’t really have any nicknames.

What is your current occupation?

Right now I am still studying in highschool.

What is your dream job/vocation?

I have a lot of dream jobs but the one that is related to this passion is being an international wedding/ brand photographer. I love traveling, meeting new people, and seeing new places, and of course, photography, so it would be such a blessing to be able to do that full time.

If you could describe your favourite passion in one word, what would it be?

Let’s forget about the one word answer, what is your passion? Be as short or as detailed as you’d like.

I started off doing photography while traveling with my family and taking mostly just landscape photos and really enjoyed that, but I wanted to introduce a human element so I started doing events, portraiture, and lifestyle photography. I’m very passionate about the environment as well so I always try to tie nature and people together through my photography.

What got you interested in this particular passion?

I’ve always been a creative person and love exploring different creative outlets and when I started doing landscape photography I just fell in love with it. Ever since as I’ve been exploring my own style for events, portraiture, and lifestyle photography which at this point is natural and vintage.

Any particular ‘idols’ from your favourite passion? People that inspire you and motivate you?

I don’t really have an idol but instead a mentor. I reached out to many photographers asking if I could second shoot for them just to gain experience and most nicely declined, but Clane Gessel was one of the only people to actually allow me to second shoot with them. I’ve gained so much hands-on experience because of him and have grown my creative skill as well as technical.

What else gets you excited? Could be other passions, a hobby - anything you deem relevant?

I have a bunch of random hobbies like baking/ cooking, slacklining, ceramics, and gardening which all get me excited. Gardening especially, and that would be my second passion. I have been struggling between picking a future, either photography or a permaculture farm with an emphasis on education. Being able to know what you eat because you grew it yourself is so rewarding and I would love to spread that to others.

Can you tell me about some brands/companies or products which you love?

Well, I’m a photographer so I obviously like Canon since it is my gear of choice and Adobe as well because I use their software so much. Besides that, I don’t really have any since I try to live pretty minimally.

In today’s world, we are constantly connected to apps, websites and so much more through social networks and smart phones. Which apps, websites etc do you use on a daily basis and why?

The app I use the most is Instagram because that is where I connect with people, show others my work, and get inspired by the work of others. It is pretty much my sole form of advertising at the moment so I’m on there pretty often.

What is something about yourself that you hope will change?

I often will not take on opportunities for stupid reasons that would otherwise benefit me because either I’m lazy or just shy out of it.

What do you think about more than anything else?

Not really sure.

What is your strongest sense?

My strongest sense would have to be sight probably. Not only do I have a really good vision, but I also am able to see things in a very creative sense and almost visualize what my camera would see out of my eyes. I would probably give up touch because I feel it is the least important, as long as losing touch doesn’t mean losing your hands.

Do you tend to avoid conflict and confrontation or go towards it, head-on!?

It depends on the situation I feel like. At work a definitely will confront the conflict head-on because not only does it spice up my day but also feel like that’s what I’m there for. Besides work, I usually will avoid most conflict.

How do you FEED YOUR PASSION? (Things you get up to which involve your passion in some way, large or small)?

The biggest way I feed my passion is just by doing it, it’s like a never-ending loop. The more I do it the more I want to do it. Whether that be because I found a new skill that I want to practice or just have a concept in my head that I want to execute. Also, taking inspiration from other photographers also helps a lot.

We’ve all got a past, full of highlights, low points and everything in between. If you had the power to go back in time and change one thing in your own past, what would it be?

I would go back and change all the times that I shied out of doing something, whether that be in school or in my community. I have definitely missed out on many opportunities because of that.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Although I don’t listen to music much, my favorite song would probably be:

Do any animals scare you? And if so, why?

Animals don’t scare me, in fact, I work with them very often since I volunteer at the zoo. I love spending time with them, if not more than humans.

Are you a creature of habit or an adventurous soul?

I am definitely an adventurous soul. Whether that be mountain biking, spontaneous backpacking trips, slacklining, or just a weekend road trip I always find myself doing things that get me out into nature and exploring.

Can you give us some examples of things that have ‘amazed’ you?

Nature and how it is able to create such intricate and amazing things. Also technology like the internet and cameras etc.

What’s a strange occurrence/‘thing’ you’ve experienced but have never (or rarely) shared with anyone?

On my commute back from school I encountered a homeless couple with two dogs. I decided to go buy them some dog treats and gave them it with an extra 20 bucks. I stayed and talked to them as I waited for my bus and every day I would see them in the same spot and we become sorta like friends. This was the beginning of last year, but around a couple of months after that, they had disappeared from the spot they were at and to this day I wonder where they are now and if they were able to recover.

Which books/blogs are you currently reading/watching or planning to checkout?

I watch a bunch of random stuff on YT that correlate with my hobbies of but some of my favorite channels are Epic gardening, Vice, and Peter McKinnon. I also listen to an adventure sports podcast that features a wide range of athletes.

When making an entrance to a party/gathering, do you make your presence known? Do you slip in and look for someone you know? Do you sneak in quietly and find a safe spot to roost?

I’m definitely the type of person to go and just find someone I know and stay pretty hidden. I don’t really like large gatherings and prefer to be by myself or with a small tightknit group of people.

What are the top THREE qualities that draw you to someone? (doesn’t have to be sexually, more in terms of intrigue/interest etc).

Adventurous, creative and love of nature.

Ever find yourself singing or doing something a little ‘odd’ or out of the blue?

Songs get stuck in my head very easily so I often times will be singing songs in my head and it’s very annoying. Might be the reason why I don’t listen to much music.

What’s your all-time favourite place to visit?

My all-time favorite place I visited is tied between Austria, Switzerland, and Norway also. All three of those places are SO beautiful and I love to capture them on camera. Whether that be the Alps or the Fiord. There are also so many outdoor activities there as well.

Where would you like to visit in the future and why?

I really want to visit Iceland and should have been there right now if it wasn’t for COVID-19 which I’m super bummed about. It is so beautiful there and the landscapes are just breathtaking. Greenland is also on the bucket list but it is a bit harder to plan a trip there because of the extreme weather conditions.

Have you got a favourite ‘all time’ movie?

Don’t really watch many movies, but if I had to choose – Bad Boys 2.

Thank you for taking the time to submit your passions and supportive imagery Sasha. Slacklining sounds like an epic hobby and I’d certainly love to give it a go one day.

I completely agree with you when it comes to simply doing something. There’s so many times people have concepts and ideas, but it can be difficult to find the ‘get-up-and-go’. All it usually takes is a little push. So much easier to consume than create.
