Dhiren Rao: Escape Into His World of Photography

This is GPAD’s first external submission. All media found on this page belongs to the featured person and you will be able to find their links throughout the post.

Meet Dhiren Rao

Mid June, GPAD opened it’s doors to external submissions worldwide. We were hungry to find out what people are passionate about, and being based in the UK, meant we were restricted somewhat in regards to who we can meet with and document ourselves.

We set up a Project on the platform ‘We The Project’, in the hopes that we would be able to find people from around the world who wanted to share a little about themselves, their story and their interests.

And are we glad we did!

Dhiren Rao was one of the first submissions we received and we were blown away by the quality, depth and immersive nature of his photography.

Below you’ll find just a selection of images he sent over.

Q & A

Whenever possible, we try and get a quick Q & A with featured people, so we can delve a little deeper into their interests and passions. It’s also nice to find out more about new people you come across and get a feel of their past, their aspirations and some of the quirkiness that makes it all possible.

Here’s mine and Dhiren’s chat together:

Hi! So, before we begin, what’s your name?

Dhiren Rao

Where are you currently based?

The Netherlands.

Any unusual or bizarre nicknames your known as?

Not really.

What is your current occupation?

Student (Product Design)

What is your dream job/vocation?

Product Designer and photographer as a side thing.

If you could describe your favourite passion in one word, what would it be?

ESCAPE

Let’s forget about the one word answer, what is your passion? Be as short or as detailed as you’d like.

My passion is Photography.

What got you interested in this particular passion?

When I was 6 years old I was very amused with a camera and the fact that you could freeze something and be able to look back at it, since then I always snapped photos but when I was 12 my brother gifted me a camera and since then I never looked back.

When I’m taking a picture, for an instant the world outside comes to a standstill, everything goes quiet, and I’m focused just on the scene in front of me. It’s a powerful feeling.

Any particular ‘idols’ from your favourite passion? People that inspire you and motivate you?

What else gets you excited? Could be other passions, a hobby - anything you deem relevant?

I have a passion for cars and travelling.

Can you tell me about some brands/companies or products which you love?

I do not think I have a love for any brand in specific, as long as their product is functional and can make a positive difference in my life that is all I need.

In today’s world, we are constantly connected to apps, websites and so much more through social networks and smart phones. Which apps, websites etc do you use on a daily basis and why?

Instagram- It is where most of my creative work goes to.

I also like to look at other creators and learn from them.

Youtube- I think youtube is a great place to learn but also be able to see how other people in the same field of work.

What is something about yourself that you hope will change?

I want to put myself out there more. I personally am more introverted and it causes me to not approach someone and seek opportunities.

Where would you like to visit in the future and why?

BANFF.

I love being surrounded by mountains because it reminds me how small I and my problems are in comparison and I have heard that BANFF is the place to be.

What do you think about more than anything else?

Where I’ll go next and where my life will take me…

What is your strongest sense?

Touch.

How do you FEED YOUR PASSION? (Things you get up to which involve your passion in some way, large or small)?

I try to create almost everyday, the photos I get will never be the best but being able to create with your current surroundings is important.

I try to find beauty in the smallest of things. It’s important to realise your skills and make sure that you improve constantly. We live in a world where everything is so easily accessible and you’re expected to be on top of your game at all times but it is also important to slow down and work at your own pace.

We’ve all got a past, full of highlights, low points and everything in between. If you had the power to go back in time and change one thing in your own past, what would it be?

I do not think I would like to change anything from my past because I believe that if I had done anything different then I would not be where I am today.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Are you a creature of habit or an adventurous soul?

I think I try to cater to my wants/needs and once I figure it out, I tend to stick to it for a long time so I would call myself a creature of habit.

Can you give us some examples of things that have ‘amazed’ you?

Human capabilities, Physics and Human vulnerability (Covid-19)

Which books/blogs are you currently reading/watching or planning to checkout?

Aba and Preach, Peter Mckinnon, The Ground up Show

These are clickable should you wish to check them out!

When making an entrance to a party/gathering, do you make your presence known? Do you slip in and look for someone you know? Do you sneak in quietly and find a safe spot to roost?

I slip in and look for someone I know or sneak in quietly and find a safe spot to roost.

What are the top THREE qualities that draw you to someone? (doesn’t have to be sexually, more in terms of intrigue/interest etc).

Being Direct and Straightforward.
Logical
Humororous

What’s your all-time favourite place to visit?

Glacier National Park
